The wavefunction represents all possible implementations before execution.
Every architecture you haven't chosen. Every schema you haven't committed. Every path you haven't taken. They all exist — simultaneously — until you measure.
In quantum mechanics, Ψ (psi) is the wavefunction. It doesn't describe a single state. It describes the space of all possible states, each weighted by a probability amplitude.
This is not literal physics. It's an abstraction. But it's a useful one — because it preserves behaviour under constraint.
Map it:
The cat is alive and dead until you open the box.
Your system is monolith and microservices until you deploy. Your schema is normalised and denormalised until you run the first query. Your startup is viable and dead until you ship.
The box is comfortable. Superposition is powerful. But nothing is real until you open it.
The cat doesn't care about your opinions. It cares about observation.
Fire particles through two slits. Don't measure which slit they pass through — you get an interference pattern. Waves. Possibility interacting with possibility.
Measure which slit — the pattern collapses. Particles. Single outcomes. No interference.
This is about keeping an open mind before you impose constraint.
Let competing approaches coexist without picking a winner. Let ideas cross-pollinate. Let unexpected combinations emerge from the interference. The best solutions often come from the spaces between the things you were actually considering.
Impose structure too early — decide the answer before the question is fully formed — and you kill the interference pattern. You get the expected outcome. The safe one. The one you already knew.
Not all states in a wavefunction are equally likely. Each has an amplitude — a weight that determines the probability of collapse into that state.
The question is: do you already have hidden constraints?
Your past experience, your preferences, the last thing that worked, the technology you know best — these are all amplitudes. They bias your wavefunction before you've even started. You think you're exploring the full possibility space, but you're already weighted toward a subset of it.
That's not always bad. Good heuristics are earned. A senior engineer's amplitudes come from real collapses — things that worked, things that failed, patterns that survived contact with reality.
But unexamined bias is a hidden collapse. You never explored the other states. You just assumed they had zero amplitude.
The discipline is knowing which weights are earned and which are inherited. Which amplitudes come from evidence and which come from comfort.
This is the only question that matters.
Collapse early. Collapse often. But never permanently.
Prototype. Measure. Revert. Expand. Collapse again. Every collapse is an experiment, not a commitment. Keep the wavefunction recoverable.
Late binding. Defer decisions until the last responsible moment.
Don't lock schema before you understand access patterns. Don't choose infrastructure before you understand load. Let constraints force the collapse — not deadlines, not opinions.
Hold the tension. Sit with ambiguity.
Most bad decisions are premature collapses. The system wasn't ready. The information wasn't there. The amplitude distribution was flat and you picked randomly.
Listen. Feel. Delay the collapse until it's right.
Some collapses don't have an undo. Relationships. Identity. Purpose. These deserve a fully evolved wavefunction before observation.
