The Growth Triangle

Capability, judgement, opportunity. Three systems. Remove one and the whole thing stalls.

The Three Systems

Growth is not one thing. It's three interdependent systems that most people treat as one.

Capability โ€” what you can do (skills, knowledge, execution capacity)
Judgement โ€” how well you decide (pattern recognition, risk assessment, timing)
Opportunity โ€” what you're allowed to attempt (access, sponsorship, positioning)

Each feeds the others. None works alone.

The Failure Modes

No Capability

Promoted beyond competence. The Peter Principle in action.

No Judgement

High capability wasted on the wrong problems. Fast in the wrong direction.

No Opportunity

The right person in the wrong room. Potential energy with no release mechanism.

How They Connect

Career development builds capability
Mentoring sharpens judgement
Sponsorship creates opportunity

Most people focus obsessively on capability โ€” because it's the one they control directly. But judgement and opportunity are where the leverage lives.

The Diagnostic

If you feel stuck, ask which leg is missing:

Can you execute at the level required? โ†’ Capability
Are you making good decisions about where to invest? โ†’ Judgement
Are you visible to people who can change your trajectory? โ†’ Opportunity

The answer tells you which system to invest in next. Not all three. The one that's weakest.

Capability is necessary. Judgement is multiplying. Opportunity is unlocking. The system only works when all three are live.
